the Duggar girls and mother in their Prarie dresses, before TLC improved their image and lifestyle:

Child labor (primarily for girls) in the Duggar family (IBLP) is called the buddy system and "jurisdictions." this can begin at 6 years old: imagine even being 12 years old and having to bottle feed and diaper your baby sister or brother, in the middle of the night, while also having to look after two or three other siblings. Not to mention, maintain your jurisdiction (area of the house to clean).
Imagine hoards of kids living in a 900 square ft house (the Duggars before TLC) with food insecurity and weird boundary violations, or worse, that are inevitable in large families. I don't have to imagine it.
When I was 5 years old, I helped my mother take care of a quadriplegic man. He would spit whatever was in his mouth, such as Milk of Magnesia, all over the mirror of his iron lung and I would have to clean it up. His iron lung was in my bedroom and I found it to be spooky.
I still cannot wrap my mind around how I envied a quadriplegic as a 5 year old, because he didn't have to do anything. I was very quickly labeled lazy and a hypochondriac by the oldest girl sibling and next to the youngest girl. I don't care anymore... Question: "Janice, what are you going to do today?" Answer: "as little as possible."
